Ants Go Marching
Traditional, adapted by Eric Litwin and Michael Levine

Lyrics:

The ants go marching one by one hoorah! Hoorah! (2x)

The ants go marching one by one

The little one stopped to suck his thumb

And they all go marching down

To the ground

To get out of the rain

Boom boom boom.

The ants go marching two by two - the little one stopped to tie his shoe

The ants go marching three by three - the little one stopped to shake his knees

The ants go marching four by four - the little one stopped to touch the floor

Activities:

Direction Dance (with the CD): Play the song on the CD while singing and marching to the beat around the house. STOP at the word “stopped,” then act out the activities for each verse, such as pretend-sucking your thumb, tying your shoe, etc.

“And they all go marching down…rain”, gradually get lower to the ground. You could “sprinkle” your fingers over your head for rain if you like.

“Boom boom boom”- move your arms strongly three times as you rise back up. Or clap your hands on your lap for each boom.

Sing A Cappella (without the CD): You can go up to 10 if you feel the enthusiasm. Ask your child to try to come up with rhymes for each number, such as “five-jive,” “six-twist,” “seven-heaven.” Here are some examples to help you out if you get stuck!

1- suck his thumb 2- tie her shoe
3- shake his knee 4- touch the floor
5- hand-jive 6- do the twist
7- jump to heaven 8- silly shake
9- wiggle his spine 10- scratch his chin
